Columbia, South Carolina, ( founded March 26, 1786 ) was the first city and as well as the first-planned capital in America named for Christopher Columbus.

The proper noun "Columbia" is a name widely used in English derived from that of Christopher Columbus and dates from before the American Revolution in 1776.
