Walking Back in Time
When you take a walk on the nature trail in Granby Park in Columbia, South Carolina, you can see remnants of a bygone era. Part of a stone wall still remains from one the canals that was built in the 1820s to provide safe travel around the rapids on the Congaree river. During the early years of operation, it transported an average of thirty thousand bales of cotton each year to Charleston. The railroad boom of the 1850s spelled the demise of canal travel.

Along the Congaree
A walk along the Congaree river in Columbia, SC during the winter is peaceful and quiet. Not much wildlife except for a lone blue heron stalking his next meal.
